How to Play Omen in Valorant

Omen is a Controller who controls space through smokes, a long-range blind, and the ability to teleport across the map. He is one of the easiest agents to pick up and one of the hardest to master, because his value comes from timing and map awareness rather than raw aim.

Omen’s Role: The Map-Wide Controller

Omen’s job is to deny enemy vision and create safe paths for his team. Where a Duelist like Jett forces entries with mobility, Omen sets the table with Dark Cover and then repositions with Shrouded Step. He fits almost any team composition, which is why he is a safe pick in every rank. See our Valorant roles explained guide for how Controllers slot into a team.

Omen’s Abilities Explained

Shrouded Step (Basic)

100 credits · 2 charges · C

A short teleport to a marked location. It is silent and fast, making it perfect for repositioning after placing a smoke or for faking a rotate.

Paranoia (Basic)

250 credits · 1 charge · Q

A projectile that travels in a straight line and blinds every enemy it passes through, even through walls. Use it to blind a site before your team enters, or to swing a duelist who is holding an angle.

Dark Cover (Signature)

2 charges · first free, extra charge 150 credits · 40-second restock · E

Omen’s core ability: smoke orbs that you can throw at range and even curve or move after landing. Because you can re-position smokes, Omen can adapt his cover to where the round actually goes.

From the Shadows (Ultimate)

7 ultimate points · X

A full-map teleport to any location. You can cancel it, which lets you fake a rotation and bait enemies. If you are caught mid-teleport, you can be killed, so only commit when the path is clear.

Omen pays for mobility, not for smoke

The first Dark Cover charge is free every round and the second refills on a 40-second cycle, which makes Omen the cheapest Controller to keep smoking — a 100-second round can hand him three of them for nothing. Buying the extra charge at 150 credits is a mid-round decision, not a default: it is worth it when the round has already gone long and the site still needs cover.

Everything else he owns is paid. Shrouded Step is 100 credits a charge with two charges, so 200 for a full pair of teleports, and Paranoia is 250 for a single blind that cannot be re-bought. That is 450 credits of non-smoke utility on a full buy, which is why Omen players who teleport the moment they see an angle run out of money before they run out of ideas.

How to Play Omen: Controlling Space

Good Omen players smoke for the team first, then use Shrouded Step to take an off-angle the enemy forgot about. Do not hoard Dark Cover — a Controller who never smokes is just a worse duelist. Use Paranoia to blind before executes, and save From the Shadows to retake or to punish an enemy over-rotate. If you want to understand how smoke timings shape a round, our utility basics guide breaks down the fundamentals.

Common Mistakes Omen Players Make

  • Holding smokes too long instead of using them to enable the team.
  • Teleporting into a site with no vision of where enemies are.
  • Wasting Paranoia on an empty lane.
  • Forgetting that Dark Cover can be re-positioned to cover a late push.

How to Counter Omen

Omen’s smokes are predictable if you learn common placements. A recon ability from Sova or Fade reveals him after a Shrouded Step, and clearing the smoke with utility beats a passive Omen. When he teleports, listen for the sound cue and pre-aim the landing spot.

Omen is the safest Controller to learn on, and the full agent roster will help you compare him against other options before you lock him in ranked.
