How to Play Waylay in Valorant

Waylay is a Duelist who fights with light. Her kit hinders enemies, dashes twice, and lets her teleport back to a beacon she left behind, which makes her one of the hardest agents to pin down and one of the most punishing to fight against when played with discipline.

Waylay’s Role: The Hit-and-Run Duelist

Waylay’s job is to take an aggressive angle, deal damage, and then disappear before the enemy can trade. Unlike Jett, who commits to a dash, Waylay can place a beacon first and return to it, so her aggression is reversible. She suits players who like calculated risk. Our Valorant roles explained guide explains where Duelists fit.

Waylay’s Abilities Explained

Saturate (Basic)

300 credits · 1 charge · C

A thrown cluster of light that sticks to the ground and, after a short windup, explodes. Anyone caught in the blast radius with line of sight is hindered for three seconds. Use it to shut down a rotate or to win a duel before it starts.

Lightspeed (Basic)

300 credits · 1 charge · Q

A mobility dash that sends Waylay forward twice, with each dash behaving differently. The first dash allows vertical movement toward where she aims, and the second is limited to horizontal or downward movement. Alt fire dashes only once. She also takes no fall damage while airborne after casting it.

Refract (Signature)

1 charge · 2-kill recharge · E

An instant activation that drops a beacon of light at her position. After a brief delay she becomes empowered and can transport back to that beacon on reactivation, becoming intangible while she travels. This is the core of her hit-and-run playstyle.

Convergent Paths (Ultimate)

8 ultimate points · X

Waylay projects a beam of light in an area a few meters in front of her that expands outward from the middle. Anyone caught in the expanding light is hindered, and Waylay herself gains a movement speed buff from it.

600 credits to enter a site

Waylay has the most expensive entry package of any Duelist. Saturate and Lightspeed both cost 300 for a single charge, which means bringing her full kit into a site is a 600-credit decision before you own a gun — more than a Spectre, and more than most Duelists spend on utility in a half.

Refract is the free half and the reason the price is survivable. It comes back on two kills, so the beacon she drops before dashing is a reusable exit rather than a per-round purchase, and the kills that refund it are usually the same kills the 600 credits of entry bought. Playing her without placing the beacon first is the one mistake that makes the whole price absurd.

On a half-buy the choice is Lightspeed or nothing: the dash is what gets her into the fight, while Saturate is the ability that makes the fight winnable. Picking the dash means you enter and rely on aim.

How to Play Waylay: Set the Beacon First

The strongest Waylay players place Refract before committing, then dash in with Lightspeed, take the duel, and teleport back before the trade lands. Throw Saturate on the angle you are pushing so the enemy is hindered before you arrive. Save Convergent Paths for a site execute where hindering several enemies and speeding yourself up wins the round. If your crosshair placement is inconsistent, our crosshair guide will help you hit these fast entries.

Common Mistakes Waylay Players Make

  • Dashing in without placing Refract first, so there is no exit.
  • Wasting Saturate on an enemy who is out of line of sight.
  • Teleporting back into a spot the enemy has already covered.
  • Using both dashes at once and losing the vertical option.

How to Counter Waylay

Waylay’s exit is only as good as her beacon, so watch where she drops Refract and pre-aim it. Killjoy’s Alarmbot and Cypher’s Trapwire punish predictable dash paths, and breaking line of sight with Saturate avoids the hinder entirely.

Waylay is an advanced pick that rewards planning. See the full agent roster to compare her with other Duelists.
