War Thunder Economy Broken? A Recovery Plan
Cut losses in order: stop buying modifications, drop to vehicles you survive in, lower Battle Rating, then rebuild your buffer.
At some point most War Thunder players look at their balance and realize it has been falling for days. Every match nets negative, every new vehicle feels out of reach, and the game starts to feel pay-to-win. It is not. The economy is recoverable, and recovery follows a fixed order: stop the bleeding, change what you spawn, then rebuild.
Phase 1: stop the bleeding (day one)
Freeze all discretionary spending immediately:
- Stop buying modifications. Every Silver Lion stays in the account. The modification priority guide tells you what was worth buying; right now, none of it is.
- Stop researching expensive vehicles. Park the tree at whatever is playable.
- Stop crew training except for skills on vehicles in your active lineup.
This alone converts a losing account into a flat one, because the largest controllable outflows are off.
Phase 2: change what you spawn (days one to three)
Now fix the match-level losses. The three ingredients of a negative match are high Battle Rating, expensive vehicles, and early death — repair costs explained covers the mechanics. Counter each one:
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| High BR fights | Step your lineup down one bracket; add a lower-BR vehicle to pull the room down |
| Expensive repair bills | Swap to the cheapest vehicles in your garage that still work |
| Early deaths | Play passively: second line, cover, no first contact |
The vehicle swap is the fastest lever. Drop to vehicles whose repair bills are small enough that even a losing match nets close to zero. You are not trying to earn yet; you are trying to stop losing.
Phase 3: rebuild the buffer (week one)
Once matches stop costing money, start earning again. Play the cheap, survivable vehicles from phase two and let the balance climb. Your target buffer is simple:
Buffer = total repair cost of your full lineup x a safety factor
The safety factor is how many bad nights you want to absorb — three to five is reasonable. Until you hit it, do not spend on anything beyond repairs and basic crew skills.
What recovery is not
- Not a Golden Eagle conversion. Converting GE to SL treats the symptom and spends your scarcest currency on a problem that playing solves.
- Not a premium vehicle purchase. A new vehicle adds a new BR and a new learning curve to an account that is already losing. Fix the loop first.
- Not a nation switch. A second tree restarts research from zero, which is the worst possible move during recovery.
Getting back to growth
When the buffer is full, resume normal spending in the old priority order: repairs, crew skills on the active lineup, modifications on keepers. Then fix the root cause permanently by building a grinding routine that never goes negative again — how to grind Silver Lions is that routine, and stopping negative matches is the early-warning system that keeps this from happening twice.
