War Thunder Naval Mode: How It Really Plays
Understand what naval battles change versus ground and air: longer ranges, slower repositioning, and water as terrain.
Naval is the youngest of War Thunder’s four branches, and it does not play like ground with boats. The engagement ranges are longer, the repositioning is slower, the cover is different, and a mistake costs you the whole match instead of one respawn. Before you research your first hull, understand what the mode actually asks of you.
Which nations have naval lines
Not every nation has a naval line. Roughly seven nations do, and the exact list has grown over time, so check the tech tree in-game for the current set before planning a naval start. If your main nation lacks a line, naval means either a second tree or a second garage, which is a research decision, not a mode decision.
Naval versus the other branches
| Element | Ground | Air | Naval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engagement range | Hundreds of meters | Kilometers, three-dimensional | Kilometers across open water |
| Repositioning | Fast, cover everywhere | Fast, no cover | Slow, cover is islands and smoke |
| Hiding | Terrain and hull-down | Speed, altitude, clouds | Islands, distance, angle |
| Mistakes cost | One vehicle | One vehicle | Usually the whole match |
The table explains why naval feels different: every decision is more expensive. You cannot re-spawn into a better position, and a bad turn early in a match can put you in a losing position for the next ten minutes.
The mechanics that define the mode
- Gunnery at range. Shells take real time to arrive, so you lead moving targets and range them yourself. The naval gunnery page covers the details.
- Angles as armor. A ship that shows its side is a ship that gets hit. Presenting a narrow profile is a survival skill, covered in naval movement and positioning.
- Islands as terrain. Water is empty; islands are walls, ambush points, and escape routes in one.
- Objectives at sea. Capture zones work differently from ground flags; contesting one means parking in the open, which is its own risk calculation.
What stays the same
Battle rating still decides your matches, and it still punishes spread-out lineups: your lineup fights at the highest vehicle’s BR. Naval lineup BR spread covers how to structure a garage that survives that rule.
Before your first naval battle
Confirm the tech tree list, pick a first hull with the first boat guide, and run one match with the single goal of learning shell travel time. Everything else in the mode builds on those two facts.
