How to Choose a Squadron in War Thunder
Judge a squadron by activity, time-zone overlap, size, and rules before applying, so you actually earn the bonus you joined for.
Most squadron applications fail for one reason: the player looked at the name and the size and ignored the schedule. A squadron’s bonus only pays while its members are active, which means the right squadron is the one that is awake when you are. Here is the checklist.
The four criteria
1. Activity at your hours. The squadron’s member activity is visible in-game — check how many members are playing during the time slots you usually queue. A squadron full of players in a different time zone is a dead bonus for you, however impressive its member count.
2. Time-zone overlap. Related but distinct: you want overlap, not identical schedules. A squadron concentrated in your region means platoon partners and squadron battles at hours you can actually attend.
3. Size and stability. Larger squadrons absorb inactive members better — one player quitting does not sink the activity level. Very small squadrons can go quiet from a single absence. Size also determines member capacity and how much organized activity the squadron can field.
4. Rules and discipline. Read the entry requirements before applying: minimum activity, preferred modes, voice chat expectations, or vehicle rating requirements for squadron battles. A squadron whose rules you cannot meet will remove you for inactivity, bonus or not.
The checklist
Run this before applying to any squadron:
| Check | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Member activity | Members online and playing during your typical session hours |
| Reward level | Squadron currently holding a non-zero bonus level |
| Mode focus | Squadron plays the modes you play (ground / air / naval) |
| Entry rules | Activity or rating requirements you can actually meet |
| Size | Large enough to survive quiet weeks |
| Vibe | Public chat or description suggests an adult, organized group |
The squadron interface in-game shows current member counts and activity — verify there rather than trusting forum posts.
Red flags
- Reward level at or near zero: the bonus you are joining for does not currently exist.
- Member list full of players who never appear online.
- Requirements you would have to break your own schedule to meet.
- No rules at all — undisciplined squadrons churn members and lose activity just as fast.
After you join
Apply the squadron mechanics in reverse: your play is now part of the squadron’s activity. Play a few battles a week in squadron vehicles if the group runs them, and if the squadron goes quiet, leave and apply elsewhere — loyalty to an inactive tag costs you the bonus. If squadron play convinces you to run your own organization, read the cost breakdown in squadron creation cost first, and judge any squadron vehicle purchase with the squadron vehicle worth it framework.
