Apex Ranked Points System: How RP Is Calculated
Beyond the tiers: how Ranked RP is earned and lost — entry cost, placement points, the kill cap, Challenger Bonus, and decay in Diamond plus.
The ranked system guide explains the eight tiers and the Split 2 reset. This page is the math underneath: how a match turns into RP gained or lost.
RP = placement + eliminations − entry cost
Every ranked match resolves to a single number:
- Placement points — awarded for where your squad finishes. A win or top-3 pays far more than a 20th; the curve is steep at the top.
- Elimination points — for kills and assists, with one catch (below).
- Entry cost — each division charges RP just to play in it. Bronze is near zero; it scales up to Master (~75). You must earn this back before you “profit,” which is why demotions feel brutal.
The kill cap and the 8-kill rule
Elimination points are capped — only your first several kills/assists in a match count at full value, and points per elimination are halved after your 8th of the match. Translation: farming 20 kills in one lobby does not pay linearly. The system rewards a few clean eliminations plus a good placement, not a kill-farm that ignores the circle.
Challenger Bonus
Beating someone better than you pays extra. Eliminating or assisting on a higher-ranked player grants a Challenger Bonus to your RP. Climbing is faster when you hunt squads above your rank rather than farming below you.
Decay and demotion
From Diamond upward, inactivity costs RP (decay), so you can’t bank a rank and vanish. Demotion protection softens the first drop out of a tier, but it is not a shield forever — a bad stretch still costs you.
The decision
Stop optimizing for kills. The reliable climb is consistent top-10 finishes plus two or three eliminations, especially against higher-ranked squads for the bonus. One 15-kill game followed by five 20th-place dumps nets less than six steady placements. Track your progress against the ranked distribution to see where you sit, and the map rotation to prep for the current map’s fights.
