Destiny 2 Difficult and Threat modifiers: what they mean
Difficult raises enemy health and damage, so bring sustain. Threat names the weekly element — match your subclass to it for a real edge.
Most players see “Difficult” on the card and panic. Then they ignore “Threat” completely and wonder why they died.
These two modifiers do different things. Reading both before you launch saves you a failed run and a wasted reset.
The mistake everyone makes
Players treat Difficult as a wall. They swap to a slow boss build instead of adjusting their resistances.
Threat gets skipped even more. It tells you which element the enemies are weak to this week.
What “Difficult” actually does
Difficult raises enemy health and damage. You cannot turn it off, so your clears take longer by design.
Bring sustain, not just burst. A survivability exotic matters more here than your biggest single hit.
Reading the “Threat” tag
Threat names an element like Solar or Void. Match your subclass to it for a real damage and resistance edge.
Miss the match and you fight uphill. The bonus is free, so there is no reason to leave it on the table.
Plan around both
Lean into the Threat element first. Then add one defensive piece to soak the extra hits from Difficult.
A simple planning order
Read the card top to bottom before you load: confirm the Threat element, set your subclass to match, then slot one resist or heal exotic for the Difficult tax. Doing it in that order takes ten seconds and prevents most wipes. If the two clash, such as a Threat element you cannot comfortably play, consider a different activity rather than forcing a mismatch.
Check the modifier stack before every launch. Our modifiers guide explains each type in detail.
Nightfalls lean on these hard. Our Nightfalls guide shows how to build for the weekly combo. For daily content, Strikes guide covers loadouts that survive modifier pressure without much effort.
