Destiny 2 Grasp of Avarice Dungeon and Gjallarhorn

Grasp of Avarice is the 30th Anniversary dungeon that unlocks Gjallarhorn. Here is how the Burden of Riches mechanic works

Grasp of Avarice is the dungeon from the Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack. It is a love letter to the original Destiny loot cave, and it is the only way to earn Gjallarhorn. The dungeon is short, chaotic, and built around one mechanic: Burden of Riches.

The mechanic

Enemies drop white engrams. Picking one up gives you Burden of Riches, a stacking debuff with a timer. You must deposit the stacks into a crystal before the timer runs out, or you die. The whole dungeon is a deposit race, and greed is punished hard.

Grasp of Avarice encounter breakdown

The opening is the loot cave wave fight. The first boss, Phry’zhia the Insatiable, is an ogre that needs engram deposits to break its shield. The final boss, Captain Avarokk, is a damage race with the same deposit cycle at higher stakes.

Gjallarhorn and the catalyst

The exotic quest “And Out Fly the Wolves” starts from Xur at his Treasure Hoard in Eternity. It requires the dungeon and a Wolfpack Round farm. The catalyst comes from three hidden chests in a single run, guarded by Reaver Vandals. You must open the first two chests for the third to spawn.

Burden stack mistakes in Grasp of Avarice

  • Hoarding stacks instead of depositing.
  • Leaving a hidden chest behind.
  • Running it solo without a deposit plan.

FAQ

Is the dungeon free? No. It needs the 30th Anniversary Pack.

Can I solo it? Yes, but the deposit cycle is slow alone.

What else drops? Four reprised legendaries plus class armor, and Artifice armor on Master.

Grasp of Avarice run checklist, deposits to chests

  • Deposit stacks early and often.
  • Open all three hidden chests in one run.
  • Grab the Gjallarhorn quest from Xur.
  • Farm Wolfpack Rounds in Exodus Garden 2A.

Do you need a fireteam? No, the dungeon is soloable, but a fireteam clears it far faster. The hidden chests and the Burden of Riches timer are the only real pressure.

The Gjallarhorn quest is the main reason to be here, and the Gjallarhorn guide covers the three catalyst chests; the dungeon hub has the current rotation.
