Destiny 2 name change: how to change Bungie Name
How Destiny 2 name changes work, where Bungie Names are managed, and what to know before you swap the name your fireteam sees.
Can you change your name in Destiny 2? Yes, but the answer depends on which name you mean. The game keeps your Bungie Name and your platform gamertag separate, and each one changes in a different place.
How your Bungie Name works
Your Bungie Name is the identity tied to your account. It follows you across platforms through cross-save, and it pairs a name with a number tag so two players can share the same handle. Changes happen in your profile settings on Bungie.net, not inside the game client.
Bungie limits how often a name can be swapped. Treat the choice as close to permanent and pick something you will still like next season. If the handle you want is taken, the number tag gives you room to work with.
Platform names are separate
Changing your platform gamertag on console or Steam does not rewrite your Bungie Name. The reverse is true as well. Friends who search by gamertag may see a different display name than the one in your fireteam. Clan tags are managed separately again, by clan leadership.
Where the name shows up
Your Bungie Name appears on your emblem, in clan rosters, and in fireteam lists. Platform names still matter for friend requests on console. Knowing which identifier is which saves confusion when a friend cannot find you after the swap.
What does not update
Display names in old screenshots and LFG posts stay frozen. If you change your name mid-raid group, tell your fireteam, or they will not recognize the invite. Bookmark any profile links you shared, because the old name stops resolving to your account.
Before you change it
Check how the new name looks in a clan roster and next to your emblem before committing. The name shows up in more places than the character screen, and a rushed pick follows you for months.
Your Bungie Name follows the account rather than the platform, and the cross-save guide covers how linked accounts behave after a change.
