Destiny 2 Beginner's Guide: What to Do First
New to Destiny 2? Start with New Light, follow the active quest, raise your Power, and learn the Tower before chasing any build.
You open Destiny 2 for the first time and the screen is a wall of icons. The director map, the quest log, and a list of modes you have never heard of can freeze a new player in place. Most quit before they finish a second mission, or they copy a streamer build they do not understand and wonder why it falls apart.
What to do first in Destiny 2
Start with New Light. It is the free intro that teaches movement and shooting through short, guided missions. Finish it before you read any build guide. The goal is to learn how your Guardian moves and fights, not to optimize anything yet.
Follow one quest at a time
After New Light, follow the active quest marker on the director. One quest at a time. Destiny 2 rewards forward progress far more than scattered side activities, and a clear main path raises your Power faster than wandering. Campaigns and destinations are where you collect gear and learn the world.
How Power levels work
Your Power number is the game’s gear-level system. It climbs from rewards, not from random play. Stick to the quest and the bounties it points you toward. Daily bounties from Tower vendors give steady XP and a reason to try new activities.
Tower vendors and your first Vault visit
Visit the Tower vendors early. Banshee-44 hands out weapon bounties. Zavala, Shaxx, and Drifter run the main activity playlists. Xur sells Exotics on weekends.
The Vault stores spare gear. None of this needs a manual — just walk up and listen.
Do not chase a meta build in your first week. The systems underneath — subclasses, armor stats, Exotics — take time to learn. Builds you copy later will actually make sense once you understand them.
Save upgrade materials early
Save your upgrade materials. Enhancing gear you will replace in two hours wastes a scarce resource. Hold upgrades for pieces you plan to keep.
Read our New Light first steps guide for the Tower map, and our class choice guide before you commit to a playstyle. Both shrink your first hours.
Destiny 2 is a long game with no clock on your back — finish New Light, follow one quest, and let the rest unfold.
