Escape from Tarkov Food and Water: The Stat Nobody Tracks
Energy and hydration decay in and out of raid, and hitting zero costs you health. What to carry, and why the hideout solves it permanently.
What the stats do
Both decay continuously — during a raid and between raids. Low energy reduces your stamina and regeneration; zero energy starts damaging you. Hydration behaves the same way, and it decays faster than players expect. So a player who enters a raid already depleted is entering with a handicap they did not choose, and a long raid can end with a death that had nothing to do with another player.
What to carry
One drink and one food item as a minimum, more on a long map. The cheap options — water, juice, crackers — are fine; the expensive ones mostly save inventory space rather than doing something different. Do not eat the good stuff. A high-value food item is worth more sold than consumed; the stat does not care what it cost. Carry, do not pre-eat. Topping up before the raid wastes the buffer, because the decay continues. Eat mid-raid when the meter is low and the raid still has time to run.
The permanent fix
The hideout has a nutrition unit that generates food and drink over time, which converts a recurring cost into a one-off build. That is the real answer to the system: it stops being a decision once the hideout is up. Until then, it is a shopping list item, and the hideout page explains why the nutrition unit competes with more exciting builds for the same materials.
The interaction with weight
Food and water are weight, and weight is stamina, and stamina is whether you can run to an extract. That is the actual trade: a full canteen is insurance against a slow death and a small tax on every fight. The resolution is to carry the minimum that covers the raid length rather than the maximum that fits. The weight page covers how the penalty scales, and the loot page covers what is worth the space instead.
How to notice it
The symptom is a player who “suddenly” cannot sprint away from a fight, or whose stamina regen feels broken. Check the meters before blaming the game — depleted hydration is the most common explanation for a raid that felt wrong.
