Escape from Tarkov Weight: Why You Cannot Sprint
Weight drains stamina, slows you down and makes you loud. How to decide what a raid is actually for, and what to leave on the floor.
What being heavy costs
Stamina. Heavier loads drain stamina faster and regenerate it slower, so a fight at the end of a long crossing is fought on empty. Speed. You move slower, which matters most in the only moment it ever matters — breaking contact. Noise. More weight means more sound, which is the same as telling nearby players where you are. The combined effect is that a loaded player loses fights they would have won, and the cause is invisible in the moment. It looks like bad luck; it is a backpack.
What is worth carrying
The test is not value, it is value per slot and per kilogram. A cheap item that stacks is usually a better use of weight than an expensive single item, because the expensive item will be sold anyway. Three rules that work: Leave the gun. A second weapon is the heaviest thing you can carry and the least useful. Take the one you will use and take its magazines. Do not carry armour you would not wear. Spare armour is nearly always a mistake; it is enormous and you will not swap mid-raid. Loot by category, not by item. Ammunition, medical items, and barter materials are light and always sellable. Random weapons are heavy and often worth less than the parts you could carry instead.
The strength skill
The strength skill raises your carry capacity and reduces the penalty, which means the same loadout becomes viable after enough raids. It is one of the few skills that changes your options rather than a number, which is why it is worth training deliberately — the skills page covers how skills actually level.
The strategic version
Weight is also the argument for deciding what a raid is for before you enter. A raid for quest items carries nothing but a kit and a container. A raid for money carries the biggest bag you can move in. A raid for a fight carries the minimum. Trying to do all three is how players end up heavy, slow, and dead with a bag worth less than the kit. The loot page covers the value math, and the stash page covers why “I will sell it later” is not a plan.
