Escape from Tarkov Loot: Value per Slot, Not per Item

Roubles per slot decides what leaves the raid with you. Why the expensive-looking rifle is usually the worst thing in your backpack.

The wrong instinct

The instinct is to pick up the thing that looks valuable. That instinct points at rifles, armor and helmets, which are usually the worst value per cell in the game, and which also make you slower and noisier on the way to the extract. A gun is worth what a trader or the flea market pays for it, divided by the cells it occupies, minus the risk of carrying something the size of a rifle across the map. Most of the time the answer is: leave it.

What actually pays

Small, dense, boring items. Components, electronics, medical supplies, ammunition, keys. These are the items that hide in containers and sell in bulk, and they are the reason a full raid of small containers beats one lucky weapon crate. The rule of thumb: before you pick up anything, ask what a full backpack of that item would be worth. If the answer is less than a full backpack of the small stuff, it is a trap.

Containers by type

Static containers — crates, cabinets, safes, toolboxes — have fixed loot pools and fixed spawn points. Learning three of these on one map is worth more than knowing all of them on five. Dynamic loot on bodies and in weapon boxes depends on who died there and how they were equipped, which makes it unpredictable but occasionally enormous. Quest and hideout items are worth carrying even at low value per cell, because they save you a purchase later. That is a different kind of profit and it does not show up in the raid summary.

The survival multiplier

Value per slot is only half the equation. A backpack of 40,000 roubles per cell that you lose at the extract is worth nothing, while a backpack of 15,000 per cell that extracts nine times out of ten is worth more than double. That is why the extract rules belong on the same page as the loot table. Knowing which exit is open and how long the walk takes changes what is worth picking up.

The habit that fixes looting

Loot on the way to the exit, not on the way in. Enter light, move fast, do the objective, and then fill the bag on the return leg along a route you already know is clear. The money page builds on this: consistent small raids beat occasional big ones.
