Escape from Tarkov Medical Items: What Fixes What

Bleeding, fractures, pain and blacked limbs are four different problems with four different fixes. Carrying the wrong item is a death.

The four problems

Light bleeding. Manageable but constant. A bandage stops it. Left alone it drains health slowly, which is survivable until it is not. Heavy bleeding. Fast and lethal. This needs a dedicated haemostatic item; a bandage does not stop it. Running out of haemostatics is the most common preventable death in the game. Fractures. A broken limb cripples movement and aiming. A splint fixes it, and without one a fracture turns a winnable fight into an escape attempt. Blacked limbs. A limb at zero health is destroyed, and healing items will not restore it — you need a surgical kit to bring it back in raid. Until then the limb’s penalties apply.

What to carry

The minimum that covers all four:

  • A medkit for general healing.
  • A haemostatic at least one, ideally two, because heavy bleeds arrive in pairs.
  • A splint one is enough if you are careful about falls.
  • Painkillers because pain affects aim and movement, and because they let you keep moving with a fracture while you look for a splint. A surgical kit is optional until you are running raids where losing a leg is common — then it becomes mandatory, because a player who cannot walk cannot extract.

The order of treatment

Treat in this order: heavy bleeding, light bleeding, fracture, then health. The reasoning is simple — bleeding kills, and healing a bleed you have not stopped is pouring water into a leak. Painkillers are not part of that order because they do not fix anything; they suppress a penalty. Take them when the penalty is stopping you from doing something, not reflexively.

The economic angle

Medical items are consumables and they are expensive. That is why the hideout medical station matters: crafting your own is cheaper than buying, and it means a bad raid does not force you to spend your whole budget on bandages. The other half is knowing when not to heal. A player at 40% health with two bleeds stopped and a clear route out should leave, not top up — the money page explains why extraction beats optimisation, and the armour page covers what actually prevents the damage in the first place.
