Escape from Tarkov Best Ammo by Caliber (2026)

In Tarkov, the round matters more than the gun. Ammo that cannot penetrate the plate barely scratches an armored PMC, while a cheap gun loaded with the right round beats an expensive gun loaded with trash. Rank ammo by penetration power and the armor class it defeats.

The five calibers that matter

5.45x39 (AK-74 platform). PPBS Igolnik (62 pen) is the ceiling but is barter-, quest- or craft-locked. BS (54 pen, 40 dmg, ~40% fragmentation) is the buyable workhorse, available from Peacekeeper L3 or found in raid. BT (44 pen, 40 dmg) is the cheaper alternative.

5.56x45 (M4 / HK416). M995 (53 pen, 48 dmg) dominates — it penetrates level-5 armor and is available from Peacekeeper L4. The budget pick is M856A1 (47 pen, 52 dmg) from Peacekeeper L3.

7.62x39 (AKM). BP (47 pen, 58 dmg) remains the king — available early from Prapor L2 or barter trades, making it the best cost-effective high-tier round. PS (30 pen, 57 dmg) is the mid-tier fallback.

7.62x51 (DMR / battle rifle). M61 (60 pen, 80 dmg) leads, from Peacekeeper L4. M62 (51 pen, 81 dmg) is cheaper; M80 (43 pen, 80 dmg) is the budget level-4 option. M993 (65 pen) is the absolute top but premium.

9x39 (VSS / VAL, suppressed). SP-6 (48–50 pen, 70 dmg) is the best close-quarters round; subsonic, so it pairs perfectly with suppressed stealth builds.

Honorable mentions

• 7.62x54R BS / SNB (70 / 62 pen) for the SVD and Mosin — class-6 delete.
• .338 Lapua AP — true class-6 penetration with a tiny ammo pool.
• .366 TKM AP-M (50 pen, 110 dmg) for the Vepr Hunter / Saiga-12.

Armor context

Class 4 is the default mid-raid plate (~40–45 pen to beat), Class 5 is serious kit (~50–55 pen), and Class 6 is top plates (~55–62 pen). Failed pens still chip durability, but against fresh class 5–6 you die first.

The availability trap

The highest-pen rounds (BS, M995, M993) are often locked behind barter, quests, or crafts. The meta you can actually buy leans on M80, M855A1, SP-6 and AP-M. Plan your loadout around what you can source this wipe, not the theoretical best.
