Escape from Tarkov Armor Plates: Coverage Beats Class

A class 6 plate that covers your stomach loses to a class 4 plate over the vitals. How plate zones, durability and material actually interact.

Coverage first

Every plate covers specific body zones. A plate over the chest protects the chest; it does nothing for the stomach, the arms or the head. That is why a heavy plate carrier with a single front plate can be worse than a lighter rig with two. The practical test: stand in the loadout screen and look at which zones light up. If the stomach is uncovered, every round that lands there goes through whatever soft armor the rig has, which is usually far weaker. Most deaths that “should not have happened” are stomach or side hits through a gap.

Class is a threshold, not a multiplier

Armor class sets what it can stop. Against a round whose penetration is below the class threshold, the plate stops the round and loses durability. Against a round above the threshold, the round gets through with reduced damage and the plate loses more durability. So class matters in relation to what is being shot at you. A class 4 plate against mid-tier ammo behaves like a wall; against top-tier ammo it behaves like a delay.

Durability is the real stat

Plates degrade. A plate at half durability no longer performs at its class, and a repaired plate has a lower maximum than it started with. That is why looting plates off bodies is often a downgrade disguised as an upgrade, and why carrying a spare plate matters more than carrying a spare gun. Check durability before you equip anything from a corpse. The loot page covers what is worth taking off a body and what is scrap.

Material and weight

Different materials trade durability retention against weight. A heavier rig absorbs more punishment but taxes stamina, and stamina is what you spend every time you reposition. On a big map the lighter plate wins fights it never has to take, because you arrive first.

The build rule

For a general-purpose kit: front and back plates at the best class you can afford and replace, side coverage if the rig allows it, and a helmet that covers what your plate does not. A head with no helmet and a chest with class 5 is a build that dies to one headshot from a scav with a cheap rifle. The helmet question is separate and messier — see the helmet page for why face shields are a trap for some players and mandatory for others.
