Escape from Tarkov Night Vision: Raiding After Dark
Night raids halve the number of players and double the value of light discipline. What night vision changes and what it costs.
Why people raid at night
Fewer players, quieter maps, and better survival rates for players who are prepared. Night raids are the classic answer to a bad economy: the loot is the same and the competition is halved. The catch is that “prepared” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Without a light source of some kind you are effectively blind, and being blind in a dark building is worse than being outnumbered.
The three tiers of seeing at night
No light source: you can see silhouettes against the sky and almost nothing inside. This is playable outdoors and unplayable indoors. A flashlight: full visibility and full disclosure. Everyone in the building knows where you are. Night vision: full visibility at a cost of peripheral vision, colour, and some ergonomics. It also makes you visible to other night vision users, and it emits a signature that can be detected.
Night vision changes the fight
With night vision, the enemy who does not have it is at an enormous disadvantage, and the fight becomes a matter of seeing first rather than shooting better. That asymmetry is the entire point of paying for the device. It also changes how you move. Interiors that are a maze in daylight become a maze with a green rectangle in front of you, and the loss of peripheral vision gets people killed at corners.
Light discipline
The cheapest night-raid skill is not carrying a light. Use ambient light, move through dark areas with the device only, and use the flashlight in short bursts to confirm rather than to navigate. The second skill is knowing when to turn it off. A flashlight that is on while you are standing still is a target marker.
What night raids are actually good for
Questing. The reduced player count means the quest location is more likely to be free, and the AI is easier to avoid in the dark. Looting quiet maps. Shoreline’s village, Interchange’s outer sections, and Woods’ edges are all profitable and calm at night. They are bad for anything that requires fighting groups, because fighting in the dark against players who also have night vision is a coin flip with expensive stakes.
The cost of dying with it
Night vision devices are expensive and they are lost on death like everything else. Running them on a map where you expect to die is a donation. The pattern that works is to run night raids on maps you know, with kits you can replace, until the device has paid for itself in survival rate.
