Escape from Tarkov PvP: Ammo First, Aim Second

Most Tarkov firefights are decided by ammunition penetration and who was pre-aimed. The habits that turn a coin flip into an advantage.

The ammunition gate

This is the first thing to understand and the last thing new players learn. Against an armoured opponent, a low-penetration round does almost nothing to the plate and only chips the soft areas. The same rifle with the right round kills in a burst. So before a fight, the question is not “can I hit them” but “can my round get through what they are wearing”. That is why serious players spend money on ammunition and buy cheap everything else — see the ammo chart and the armour plates page for the coverage rules that decide where a round even matters.

The information gate

Most fights are won before the first shot by knowing where the other player is without being known. That is why the sound page is a PvP page: footsteps, doors, and reloads are the intelligence. Practical rules: Stop and listen. The player who moves constantly is the player who is heard constantly. Do not repeek the same angle. A wounded player is now watching it. Change the angle, not the timing. Pre-aim the likely line. Walking around a corner with the sight up is the difference between a fair fight and a won one.

The decision gate

The habit that separates good players is leaving. A fight you did not choose, in ground you do not control, against a player who already knows where you are, has a bad expected value regardless of your aim. Extracting with a mediocre bag is a win. Dying to prove a point is not, and the money page puts a number on that judgment.

The technical layer

Tarkov has desync, and pretending otherwise leads to bad conclusions. When a fight feels impossible — you shot first and died — the honest answer is sometimes that the other player’s client saw you first. Do not rebuild your whole approach around one bad exchange; look for the pattern across ten.

How to actually improve

Repeatable practice beats raids for the mechanical half. Arena gives you the same fight repeatedly with no cost, which is the only efficient way to learn burst control and peeking — see the Arena page. Then take it into raids and expect to lose. The players who become good at Tarkov PvP are the ones who kept taking fights while being honest about why they lost.
