Escape from Tarkov Best Maps for Beginners (2026)
Ground Zero, Customs and Woods are the beginner trio. Ground Zero caps level-20 matchmaking so you skip geared veterans; Customs and Woods teach tasks.
Escape from Tarkov now has twelve maps (Terminal arrived with the 1.0 release on 15 November 2025; Icebreaker was added on 25 May 2026). Learning the maps is the single biggest skill jump a new player can make, and the wrong first map will humble you fast. The goal early is to survive, learn movement, and complete tasks without throwing away gear.
The beginner trio
Ground Zero — the designed tutorial. It is built specifically for lower-level players and caps matchmaking so you are not thrown against fully geared veterans on day one. It is compact, hosts many low-level tasks, and gives bonus experience. Learn at least two extracts before your first live raid, and use Practice (Offline) mode to walk it without pressure.
Customs — the all-rounder. This is where most early Prapor and Therapist quests route you, so you will learn it whether you like it or not. Medium-sized, with recognizable landmarks (Dorms, Gas Station, Construction). Learn one side, one extract route, then one loot path before adding rotations. Note it was reworked and expanded with a Stronghold complex and a new railroad.
Woods — low pressure, big space. Large and open, with more AI Scavs than PMCs in many areas. Loot is spread out and landmarks like the sawmill and lake make navigation simple, so you can practice medium-range gunplay at your own pace.
Maps to avoid early
- Factory — smallest map, brutal PvP density, and Tagilla. New players often expect it easier and get flattened.
- Streets of Tarkov — massive urban chaos; wait until ~100+ hours.
- The Lab (Labs) — endgame only, no insurance, top-tier loot with no mercy.
Shoreline is fine later for high loot if you avoid the Resort early.
How to approach a new map
Run it first on Scav to explore without risking your gear, keep a map open on a second screen until you know your bearings, and only push fights near your extract once you understand the layout. Always run headphones — audio is half the game in Tarkov.
Recommended learning order
Ground Zero → Customs → Woods → Interchange → Reserve → Lighthouse. Stick to one map at a time until you can navigate without a guide.
