Best Tarkov Maps to Learn First: A Route, Not a Tier List
Which Escape from Tarkov map to learn first, why Ground Zero comes before Customs, and the three maps that punish beginners hardest.
Most new players lose their stash to one mistake: learning several maps at once. Every map has its own extract network, spawn pattern and sightlines, so spreading your attention means never knowing where you are on any of them. Pick one map, learn two routes off it, and only then add another. Current community guidance for the 1.1.x patch cycle converges on the same starting sequence.
Ground Zero first
Ground Zero exists for early players. It is compact, it holds a dense cluster of low-level tasks, and its standard mode restricts player levels so you are not immediately fed to fully geared veterans. Several guides also note it awards bonus experience. Nothing else gives you the full loot-fight-extract loop this cheaply.
Customs second, whether you like it or not
Customs is unavoidable because so much of the early task line routes through it. Its landmarks are recognizable and repeated constantly in guides: Dorms, the gas station, the construction area. Learn your spawns and two extracts and a large part of your early progression opens up at once. Expect fights here in a way Ground Zero does not force on you.
Woods third, and it is divisive
Woods is large and open, which trades surprise close-range gunfights for long stretches of quiet running. That makes it a reasonable place to learn audio cues and medium-range shooting, and the sawmill and lake give you navigation anchors. Be aware that it is genuinely polarizing: one map ranking puts it near the bottom for being slow and coverless, others call it the calmest place to learn. Both are right depending on whether you want practice or excitement.
The three maps to avoid early
Factory looks like the friendliest map because it is tiny. It has the highest death rate per raid instead: constant close-quarters fights, veteran players who know every corner, and a boss that deletes cheap kits. Streets of Tarkov is the largest urban map with sightlines from endless windows, and most advice says to wait until you have around a hundred hours. The Lab is endgame content where the entry keycard costs more than a beginner’s whole loadout. The cheapest way to test any map is the tutorial plus offline runs, then real raids on a Scav before you commit gear. That sequencing also pairs well with our first 72 hours page, and once you start tasking seriously the shared task progress page covers what your team can complete together.
