Escape from Tarkov Weapon Mods: Ergonomics Versus Recoil

Almost every mod trades ergonomics for recoil, and which you want depends on where you fight. How to build a gun for a role instead of a stat sheet.

The two numbers

Ergonomics governs how fast the weapon comes up, how much stamina aiming costs, and how long you can hold the sights. In a fight decided by who shoots first, it is the stat that decides whether you shoot first. Recoil governs where the second and third rounds go. It matters most at range and in sustained fire, and least in a one-tap exchange at close quarters. Most attachments improve one at the cost of the other. A heavy stock reduces recoil and hurts ergonomics. A lightweight handguard helps ergonomics and does nothing for recoil. That is the whole design.

Build for the fight you will have

Indoors and close. Ergonomics. You need the sight up now, and the fight will be over before recoil matters. Short barrels, light furniture, and a sight you can acquire instantly. Mid-range and open. Recoil. You will fire bursts at distance and need the group to hold. Heavier furniture, a muzzle device that actually reduces climb, and a stock that keeps the weapon stable. Long range. Recoil, plus a magnification choice that matches the terrain. A high-power scope on a map where all engagements are inside forty metres is a handicap, not an upgrade. The recoil page covers how the values interact, and the ammo chart is the other half of the equation — a perfectly built gun with the wrong round still loses.

The practical constraints

Trader levels gate the parts. Most good attachments are locked behind loyalty levels, which means a “best build” video is often describing something you cannot buy. Check what you can actually get before planning. The workbench. The hideout workbench unlocks modding and repair capability, which is why it competes with other stations for materials — see the hideout page. Cost versus replacement. A fully modded gun costs several times a base one and dies just as fast. The economic rule is the same as everywhere in Tarkov: spend on the round, economise on the housing.

The beginner version

Do not mod at all for the first while. A stock weapon with good ammunition kills armoured players; a heavily modded weapon with bad ammunition does not. Once your ammunition supply is stable, start with a sight and a muzzle device, and stop. That order is boring and it is correct. The best weapons page makes the same argument from the weapon side: availability of ammunition decides which guns are worth building in the first place.
