GTA 6 How Long to Beat: The 80-Hour Figure Explained
Rob Nelson's own playthrough ran about 80 hours, optional objectives included. What that does and does not tell you about your own run.
One figure has attached itself to this question, and it comes from a person rather than a marketing deck. The useful work is in what it counted, because that is where the difference between 60 hours and 100 hours actually lives.
The number and its source
During the August 2026 preview round, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson mentioned that a recent playthrough of his had taken roughly 80 hours. It was said in conversation, at the same Edinburgh visit where he gave the map comparisons, and it has been repeated everywhere since.
Read it as a developer’s account of one run through his own game. It is not a specification, it is not an average, and it is not a promise about your pace.
What was inside those 80 hours
The qualifier matters more than the number. Reporting from the same round describes the run as including optional objectives with narrative consequences — not just the critical path. That is a very different measurement from a main-story-only figure, because it folds in the side content Rockstar built to react to your choices.
If that is right, the 80 hours sit somewhere between a focused story run and a completionist one. A player who ignores the optional branches should finish well under it; a player who does everything, including the side activities shown in the Extended Look — street racing, jet skis, scuba diving, basketball, car meets — will pass it comfortably.
The 60-hour figure
A critical-path estimate of roughly 60 hours has circulated since the previews, mostly in secondary coverage. It is consistent with Nelson’s number if you subtract side content, and it has not been confirmed by Rockstar. Treat it as a reasonable inference rather than a stated fact.
Rockstar’s last two campaigns
GTA 5’s main story is usually put at around 30 hours by community trackers, with completionist runs near 80. Red Dead Redemption 2’s main story lands near 50, with completionist play past 170. Grand Theft Auto VI sits between those in ambition and, if the 80-hour report holds, above both on a first pass.
There is also a structural difference worth noting: this campaign has two leads you can switch between mid-mission, and a relationship branch that runs alongside the main plot. Content that reacts to behaviour tends to extend a playthrough without ever appearing on a mission list.
Planning a first run
Expect the story to carry you past the point where most games end, and do not plan a second playthrough around a faster route until you know which optional objectives actually change the story. Rockstar’s own framing is that story locations stay accessible after their missions finish, which means a first run that rushes can still come back.
