GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Leonida Is Next to GTA 5

Rockstar's own comparisons put Leonida at about twice GTA 5 and three times RDR2. Why no square-mile figure exists, and how to test any claim.

Every number in circulation describes one of two things: a comparison a named developer said out loud, or arithmetic somebody did on top of that comparison. They are not the same class of fact, and mixing them is how the map ends up “officially” 125 square miles on one site and 58 on another.

The comparisons on the record

During the August 2026 preview round, ahead of the Extended Look, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson gave content creator TGG a set of ratios at the Edinburgh studio. The world is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and about three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone is twice Los Santos, and Vice City plus its suburbs is roughly eleven times Los Santos plus its surroundings.

Aaron Garbut repeated the twice-GTA-5 comparison in Game Informer’s September 29 issue, calling Leonida the biggest map Rockstar has built. A New York Times piece built on developer interviews carried the three-times-RDR2 figure too. That is the whole official record: three rounded ratios, said in interviews, with no area attached.

Why “twice GTA 5” will not convert

Rockstar never published GTA 5’s area either, so doubling it requires choosing a baseline, and the two common baselines measure different things. Land only, Los Santos plus Blaine County, is usually put at about 48 to 51 square kilometres. Count the surrounding water the way most published GTA 5 figures do and you get roughly 75 to 80 square kilometres.

Double the first and Leonida is around 100 square kilometres of land. Double the second and it is closer to 155. Both are honest applications of the same sentence, which is precisely why any article quoting one precise figure as official is showing you its own working, not Rockstar’s.

Where the extra digits come from

The Vice City and Leonida mapping project on GTAForums has spent years reconstructing the world from trailer geometry, and its land estimate sits near 125 square kilometres. Community write-ups then convert that to 48 to 50 square miles and republish it as a measurement. It is a careful reconstruction, but it is not a measurement Rockstar took, and it should be labelled that way whenever you quote it.

Size that you feel rather than measure

The eleven-times suburb figure explains something area alone cannot. GTA 5’s map felt large partly because the drive from Los Santos to Paleto Bay crossed mostly empty road. A world where the built-up footprint grew elevenfold and the roads were drawn about fifteen per cent narrower is a different experience: more turns into something, fewer minutes of nothing.

Preview reporting also describes a very large number of enterable interiors that stay open after their missions end, which is what turns square kilometres into places you go back to. The map guide covers the six named regions and what sits in each.

Testing any claim you read

Ask three things. Does the writer name who said the ratio, and where? Do they state which GTA 5 baseline they doubled? And do they present a square-kilometre figure as a measurement or as a community estimate? A page that answers all three is usable. A page that says “officially confirmed, 125 km²” is doing arithmetic and calling it a source. The confirmed information page keeps the same separation across date, price and platforms.
