GTA 6 on PS5 Pro: Enhanced but Optional, Runs on Base PS5

Rockstar labels GTA 6 'PS5 Pro Enhanced' as optional and says it also runs on a standard PS5. What that means and whether you need a Pro to play.

GTA 6 is confirmed for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch. On the PlayStation side, Rockstar lists the game as “PS5 Pro Enhanced” — but that label is optional, and the game runs on a standard PS5.

“PS5 Pro Enhanced” does not mean “PS5 Pro required”

The Enhanced tag means owners of the newer console get extra visual or performance benefits. It does not lock the game to that hardware. A standard PS5 plays GTA 6 normally. You do not need to buy a Pro to play.

“Plays Best On PlayStation 5” is marketing, not exclusion

Rockstar’s store page carries the line “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” Read it as a preference note, not a statement that the Xbox version is inferior or excluded. Both platforms are official launch targets, and Rockstar’s own pre-order flow lets you choose your platform later — a PS5 is not required to pre-order.

What “Enhanced” usually means

On PlayStation, an Enhanced title typically gains higher resolution, a steadier frame rate, or both on the Pro hardware, while still running on the base console. Rockstar has not published the exact enhancement specs for GTA 6, so treat the Pro as a quality boost rather than a requirement. If you already own a base PS5, you lose nothing the campaign needs by staying on it.

The Xbox side

Xbox Series X and Series S are both confirmed launch platforms. The Series X is the stronger box and the Series S is the entry tier. Microsoft does not use the Pro label, but the performance step between the two Xbox models is the same kind of gap you see between a base PS5 and a PS5 Pro. Either Xbox plays the game.

If you are choosing a console

The decision between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S comes down to your existing library, your preferred controller, local pricing, and which ecosystem you already use. Rockstar has not published a technical performance comparison that crowns one over the other, so do not let the “Plays Best On” line decide for you on its own.
