Helldivers 2 Backpack Stratagems: One Slot, Four Jobs

Guard Dog, Shield Generator, Supply Pack or Jump Pack - the slot holds one. How to choose by faction and by what your squad already brought.

The constraint that decides everything

One backpack per Helldiver. That is the whole design rule, and it turns every decision here into a comparison rather than a pick. You are never asking whether the Supply Pack is good. You are asking whether it beats the Shield Generator Pack for this squad on this planet.

Guard Dog variants: damage you do not have to aim

The rover and laser variants orbit you and shoot what threatens you. Against Terminid swarms they thin the chaff that would otherwise reach you mid-reload, and they do it while your attention is somewhere else. The cost is attention of their own: a dog emptying its magazine into a corpse is a dog not covering the Charger closing on your left. Take one when the squad is short on chaff clear. Skip it when everyone already carries a wide-arc support weapon, because the dog is then solving a problem that does not exist.

Shield Generator Pack: the hit you refuse

The shield absorbs a burst and then recharges after a pause. It is the only backpack that scales with difficulty, because higher difficulties mean more incoming damage per second and a flat absorb is worth more when everything hits harder. Against Automatons this is close to mandatory for anyone holding a fixed position. Against Terminids it is weaker than it looks: a shield does not stop a Charger’s body, and the recharge window is exactly when the swarm arrives.

Supply Pack: four people’s ammunition

The Supply Pack gives you resupply charges you can hand to teammates. Its value is not the ammo count, it is that you can refill an anti-tank launcher away from a resupply point. On a long mission with limited resupply, that turns one slot into several extra anti-armor shots. It is a squad pick, not a solo pick. Alone, you carry your own ammunition and the charges go unused.

Jump Pack: the refusal

The Jump Pack is a repositioning burst on a long cooldown. It has a dedicated page, because it is the option most often taken for the wrong reason.

Choosing in ten seconds

Ask what killed the squad last mission. Swarmed at close range: Guard Dog. Held ground and got shot to pieces: Shield. Ran dry against armor: Supply. Died to your own barrage: Jump Pack. If nobody can remember, take the Shield. It is the option that is never actively wrong. Squad overlap matters as much as the individual pick. Three shields and no ammunition is a squad that survives the first wave and loses the second.
