Helldivers 2 Best Primary: The Faction Decides, Not the Tier
Bugs need volume and bots need penetration, so a primary that wins one front is wrong on the other. How to choose by faction and by role.
Bugs: volume and speed
The Terminids arrive in packs at close range, so the questions are how fast you can clear chaff and whether you can do it while backing up. Assault rifles with high rates of fire and shotguns both work. Shotguns are stronger against a breach because the pack is always at contact distance, and weaker the moment you need to shoot something at range. If you take one, your support weapon has to cover the distance. Explosive and incendiary primaries do well on bugs because the target density is high — a shot that hits three is worth three times a shot that hits one. Fire in particular spreads through a packed group, which is why the fire damage page is more relevant to bug missions than to bot ones.
Bots: penetration and precision
Automatons are armoured, they shoot back, and they present small targets at range. Volume of fire does almost nothing to a Hulk and very little to a Devastator; penetration and placement do everything. That means marksman-style primaries and anything with a high penetration value. The armour penetration values are the stat to read, and the hidden weapon stats page covers the numbers the weapon card does not show you. The trade is reciprocal: a bot-grade primary feels clumsy against a bug swarm, because it kills one thing well and there are forty things.
The support weapon is the other half
No primary solves everything, which is why the loadout is a pair. A light, fast primary plus an anti-armour support weapon is a complete bug build. A penetrating primary plus a support weapon that clears chaff is a complete bot build. Deciding the pair before you drop is the difference between a loadout that has an answer and one that has two answers to the same question. The support weapon page sorts the options by what they actually solve.
Illuminate change the question again
The Illuminate bring shields and aerial units, which rewards weapons with burst damage and punish sustained low-damage fire. If you are dropping on that front regularly, build for it separately rather than reusing a bug loadout — the Illuminate guide covers the mechanics.
How to actually decide
Pick the faction, then pick the biggest thing you cannot kill. Buy the primary that handles the swarm and the support weapon that handles the big thing, or the reverse. Never buy two weapons that answer the same target, and check the warbond it comes from before committing — the warbond guide lists what each one actually contains, and the first warbond page explains the order.
