Helldivers 2 Best Armor: Rating, Passive and the Speed Trade
Armor rating buys damage reduction and costs stamina and speed, so the passive usually decides more than the rating. How to pick per faction.
The rating is a movement tax
Light, medium, and heavy armour trade protection for speed and stamina. Heavy armour genuinely reduces the damage you take; it also makes you slower and drains stamina faster, which matters because running is how you survive a breach or a bot firing line. That trade does not scale evenly across factions. Against bugs, the danger is reaching you, so the ability to keep distance is defence. Against bots, the danger is a firing line, so raw damage reduction while you cross open ground is worth the speed. So the honest answer to “best armor” is a question: are you losing fights because you get caught, or because you get shot? Caught means lighter. Shot means heavier.
The passive decides the build
Each armour piece carries a passive, and those passives range from small (a bit more grenade capacity) to build-defining (a reduction that lets you survive a mistake you had no right to survive). The armour passive list is the reference; the practical rule is to pick the passive that solves your most common death, then accept whatever rating comes with the piece that has it. A light piece with the right passive beats a heavy piece with a passive you never trigger. That is why tier lists of armour by rating are close to useless.
The three practical builds
Speed and stealth. Light armour, stamina-focused, for players who plan to avoid most fights. Strong on bugs, weak in a bot crossfire. All-round medium. The default, and correct for most players most of the time. It survives a mistake without making you a liability on the retreat. Heavy anchor. For defence missions and players who intend to hold a line with a support weapon. Very strong on a fixed objective; genuinely bad on a map that requires repositioning every two minutes — see the mission types page for which is which.
What actually keeps you alive
Armour is one of five inputs. The others are stim discipline, cover, the reinforce budget, and not standing where a stratagem is about to land. A heavy suit will not save a player who walks into a 500kg drop, and light armour will not kill a player who breaks contact when the breach opens. The reinforce budget page explains the cost of each death, which is the real argument for armour: deaths are not just inconvenient, they are a resource your squad spends. Pick the armour that reduces the deaths you actually have.
