Helldivers 2 Difficulty Rewards: What Each Step Pays

XP, requisition and samples all scale with difficulty, but not equally. Where the curve actually bends and when harder stops paying.

Everything scales, but the sample curve is the one that matters

Experience, requisition slips, and samples all increase with difficulty. Two of those are spent and forgotten. Samples are the currency that gates your ship upgrades, and they are the reason the difficulty choice is a real decision rather than a preference. Common and rare samples appear at every difficulty. The top tier - the pink ones - only spawn from difficulty seven upward. That single gate is why the community treats seven as the working difficulty and everything below it as practice.

Samples are shared, not split

When the squad extracts, each player receives the full sample count collected, not a fraction of it. Carrying samples to extraction is a squad responsibility rather than a personal one, and a player who dies with samples on them drops them for someone else to pick up. This changes how you play with randoms. A sample on the ground is worth more than a kill, and turning around for it is usually correct.

XP and requisition flatten out

The experience curve rises quickly at the low end and then flattens. Past the middle difficulties, the extra XP per mission stops being meaningful relative to the time cost, because the limiting factor on progression is not level, it is requisition and samples. Requisition slips come from missions and major orders. They are needed for stratagem unlocks, and they accumulate faster than you can spend them once the warbond pages are done.

Medals do not scale the same way

Medals come from mission completion, operation completion, and major order participation. Playing a higher difficulty does not multiply medals per minute, and a failed high-difficulty mission pays nothing but time. Two clean mid-difficulty operations usually beat one failed push at the top end.

The honest difficulty ladder

Below four, you are learning the game and the pay is negligible. Four to six is where most of the player base should live: the mission is survivable with a random squad, samples are flowing, and a wipe does not cost the operation. Seven and above is where the top sample tier appears. It is also where one bad squad member ends the run, which means the effective sample rate can be lower than six if you are playing with strangers. Ten is a challenge mode. Play it for the challenge, not for the pay.
