Helldivers 2 Samples: The Extraction Rule for Upgrades

Samples only count if a squadmate carries them out. Common drops anywhere, Rare from Challenging (4), Super from Extreme (6) - dying drops what you hold.

The extraction rule

You can sweep every sample on the map, but if no living squad member boards the extraction shuttle with them, they are gone. Samples are held by the players who pick them up, not deposited automatically. If you die holding a pile of Supers and the team extracts without recovering your body’s loadout, those samples are lost. The habit that saves them is to spread the carry and extract as a group.

Tiers by difficulty

  • Common (green) — drop on every difficulty.
  • Rare (orange) — start dropping from Challenging (difficulty 4) upward.
  • Super (pink) — start dropping from Extreme (difficulty 6) upward. If you are farming ship modules, move up to the difficulty that drops the tier you need rather than grinding low difficulties hoping for rare tiers that cannot appear.

Shared, not personal

Samples are a shared account resource once extracted, funding ship modules that help the whole roster. They are separate from Requisition Slips (which unlock stratagems) and Medals (which unlock Warbond gear). Unlike the reinforce budget, which is a per-mission pool, samples persist across missions — but only if you actually extract with them. Once banked, they fund the ship modules that pair with the armor passives page to round out your kit.

Recovering dropped samples

If you die holding samples, a teammate can pick them up from your dropped inventory before extraction, so call out your location rather than assuming they are gone. Super samples in particular are worth the recovery run because they only appear from Extreme difficulty up. Sample gain comes from map pickups, not from killing everything, so sweep points of interest instead of farming spawn waves.
