Helldivers 2 Super Samples: Where They Spawn

Super samples sit in one cluster on a rock formation at Extreme and above. Why the rock sometimes never spawns, and how many each tier carries.

What gates them

They start at Extreme, difficulty 6. Below that you can clear an operation perfectly and still leave with zero, which is the single most common reason players think their game is bugged. The count climbs with tier: roughly two or three at Extreme, three or four at Suicide Mission, five at Impossible, six at Helldive, seven at Super Helldive. A full three-mission operation multiplies that, so a clean difficulty 9 operation is the standard farming run rather than a single mission.

Why the rock sometimes is not there

World generation can fail to place the super sample rock. The known case is Colony operations, where the formation can simply not exist on the generated map. Nothing you do recovers it — the samples were never created. That matters because the sample counter in the corner reports what exists in the world, and that counter only counts samples exposed in the open. Samples tucked inside bunkers, drop pods and containers sit outside the maximum. A map that reads two super samples when you expected four has not shorted you; it generated a smaller cluster and stuffed the rest into containers. The practical consequence: if the map shows the expected number and you cannot find the rock, stop hunting and finish objectives. The sample economy page covers what those samples buy, and wasting eight minutes on a rock that never spawned costs you the operation.

The extraction rule

Samples only bank on extraction. A player carrying a full cluster who dies on the way to the shuttle drops it, and the drop has to be picked up again by anyone still alive. On a four-player team this is rarely fatal — someone usually walks over it — but on a solo run it means the cluster lives or dies with you. Two habits fix this. First, hand samples to the player most likely to survive the walk out, which on high difficulty is whoever is not holding the anti-armor. Second, if the team is wiping, the last player standing should run for the shuttle and abandon the fight rather than the samples. A dead team with samples on the ground scores nothing.

When to stop farming

Super samples stop being the bottleneck once your ship modules pass the tiers that need them, and after that a difficulty 9 run is pure risk for a resource you cannot spend. Check the module list before you queue: if nothing on the tree still wants super samples, the ship module order is a better use of the same evening.
