Helldivers 2 Major Orders: How the Timer Works

Major orders are community-wide objectives with a hard deadline. How defence and liberation differ, what the reward actually is, and when to ignore one.

Two shapes

Liberation orders ask the community to raise a percentage on a planet the enemy holds. Progress moves when missions are completed there and barely moves anywhere else, so the whole playerbase has to agree on one planet at a time. Defence orders run the other way: a planet is under attack, and the community has a fixed window to hold it. Defence campaigns carry a shorter clock and a harsher penalty for failure, because losing the planet changes the map rather than just failing a goal. The distinction matters when you sit down for one evening. On a liberation order, missions on the wrong planet contribute nothing to the bar. On a defence order, missions on the right planet contribute for a few hours and then the window shuts.

The reward is not participation-based

Major Order rewards are paid to the whole playerbase, whether or not you played during the window. That makes them the cheapest medals in the game and the reason not to panic about a deadline you cannot make. Log in after the fact and the payout is already there. Failure is also collective. The bar either fills or it does not, and a planet lost to a defence order is gone until the community takes it back.

What the reward can be

Typically medals, sometimes a stratagem unlock, sometimes cosmetic. A stratagem unlocked this way is permanent and applies to everyone — which is why some players own tools they never earned individually. The medal cap is the constraint that decides whether a payout lands or evaporates.

When to ignore a Major Order

Three cases. You are still unlocking stratagems and modules — your progression runs on requisition slips and samples, and neither is paid by the order bar. You need super samples — those come from Extreme and above regardless of which planet the order points at. Or the order is unwinnable: a defence window with a few hours left and a bar that has not moved is not going to close, and your evening is better spent on samples. Otherwise, follow the order. It concentrates the playerbase on one planet, which means more full squads and fewer four-minute waits for a drop.
