Helldivers 2 Stealth: Avoiding the Fight You Cannot Win
Patrols detect by sight and sound, and a squad that avoids them finishes missions with stratagems left. How to move without starting a war.
What actually detects you
Two channels, and they are handled differently. Sight. Patrols and emplacements see you when you are in front of them and visible. Crouching reduces your profile, breaking line of sight removes it, and terrain is the best tool you have. A ridge between you and a patrol is worth more than a suppressor. Sound. Gunfire, stratagems, and the noise of a fight pull patrols toward you. This is the mechanic that punishes the instinct to shoot everything: a patrol you kill quietly still costs you position, and a patrol you fight loudly costs you three more. The practical rule is that the first shot of a mission should be one you chose to take, not one you took because a Scavenger wandered into view.
The three habits
Move low and slow when near patrols. Walking upright across a ridge is the single most common way squads get found. Crouch on approach, and use the terrain rather than the open lane. Break contact rather than win it. If a patrol spots you, you do not have to kill it. Running to cover that blocks sight stops the escalation, and the patrol goes back to wandering. Killing it takes longer and draws more. Do not clear what you are not asked to clear. On a map with heavy patrol density, the fastest route to the objective is the one that touches the fewest enemies. The timer is the real enemy, and fights cost time.
Where stealth stops working
Defence missions, obvious extraction points, and anything with a jammer that forces a fight. Stealth is a tool for traversal, not a universal answer — a squad that tries to sneak the final hold will simply be surrounded. Bugs are easier to avoid than bots, because a bug patrol’s detection is largely directional and its response is to charge the last place it saw you. Bots call in reinforcements, which means a bot patrol you fail to avoid escalates — see the Automaton guide for how the flare works.
The build implication
Light armour and a quiet primary make avoidance easier, and the trade is that you lose the ability to survive a mistake. That is a coherent build for a player who plans routes; it is a bad build for a player who reacts. If you want to test the style, take a solo mission on a low difficulty and try to complete it while firing as little as possible. The lesson is not that stealth is optimal — it is how much of the map you were previously waking up for no reason. Pair it with the side objective order so the route you plan is the route that matters.
