Helldivers 2 Nests and Fabricators: Stop the Source

Bug holes and bot fabricators keep producing until you close them. How spawners work, what closes them, and why clearing them out of order hurts.

Terminid nests

Bug nests are clusters of holes in the ground. They spawn units continuously until each hole is closed, and closing a hole means putting an explosive into it — a grenade, a stratagem, or anything with a blast that lands in the opening. The practical points: Holes are the objective, not the bugs. A squad that fights the defenders first runs out of time and ammunition, then closes holes with nothing left. Approach from one side. A nest cleared from a single direction keeps the escape route behind you and stops the defenders from surrounding; walking into the middle of a nest is how a routine clear becomes a wipe. Count the holes before you start. You need one explosive per hole plus a margin. Running dry on the fourth of six holes means coming back, which costs more than the grenades would have.

Bot fabricators

Fabricators are structures, not holes. They produce infantry until destroyed, and the destruction method is specific: an explosive delivered into the vent, or a stratagem that lands on the structure. Shooting the walls does nothing. This is why a bot mission can feel endless. A fabricator left intact behind a ridge will keep replacing the squad you just killed, and the fight never shrinks.

The special spawners

Some spawners produce a specific unit rather than the general pool — Stalker nests, gunship fabricators, and similar. These are usually side objectives rather than part of the main push, and they are always worth doing, because the unit they produce is the one that kills squads that ignore them. If a mission keeps producing a unit that should not be there, look for its spawner. That is almost always the answer, and it is faster than getting better at fighting the unit.

Order of operations

Clear spawners before the main objective, on the route in rather than on the route out. Two reasons: while you still have stratagems and grenades, and while the map is still quiet enough that a nest clear does not draw three patrols. The exception is a spawner sitting right next to extraction. Those are worth clearing last, because the units they produce will meet you at the ramp — see the extraction logic for how the endgame phase actually plays.

What this changes about your loadout

One reliable explosive, plus a stratagem that can be dropped on a structure. That is a loadout requirement, not a preference, which is the argument for keeping a barrage or an Eagle in the build even when the squad already has plenty of damage. The Eagle page covers the rearm cost of that decision.
