Helldivers 2 Friendly Fire: Stratagem Danger Zones
Most team kills come from a barrage called too close. The distances that matter, the call-outs that stop a wipe, and who owns the mistake.
Barrages do not have a target, they have an area
A 380mm barrage does not land where you aimed. It lands inside a wide circle around the beacon, over several seconds, with scatter. That is why experienced players throw it on empty ground behind the enemy rather than onto the enemy, and why the beacon is not a kill zone marker but the centre of a much larger one. The same logic applies to every area stratagem. The beacon is a request, not a coordinate.
The timings that matter in practice
Eagle strikes arrive almost immediately. A cluster bomb called on the ground you are standing on will kill you before you finish reading the warning. Orbital barrages take time to begin and then keep landing. They are safe to call from close range only if you move immediately and do not walk back in. Mines persist after the fight and do not distinguish targets. A minefield laid to stop a breach becomes a minefield you have to cross to reach extraction. Arc weapons chain between bodies. Standing behind a teammate who is using one is not safer than standing in front.
Call-outs that work
Say the stratagem name, the direction, and the instruction. “380 behind, move out” is usable. “Careful” is not. The warning has to arrive before the beacon lands, which means it has to be spoken before the throw animation finishes. The call-out everyone skips is the all-clear. Without it the squad keeps treating an area as hot long after it is safe, and somebody dies walking the long way around nothing.
Reinforcements are the real cost
A team kill costs a reinforcement, and that budget is the mission’s scarcest resource on higher difficulty. Two accidental wipes can end a run that was otherwise clean. Treat the reinforcement counter as the squad’s health bar and friendly fire as the main way you lose it.
Habits worth building
Throw barrages behind the objective, not onto it. Never drop a minefield on a route you will need to walk back along. Announce sentries, because a turret behind the squad shoots through the squad to reach the enemy. And when someone calls a barrage on your position, move first and argue afterwards. The squads that survive are usually the ones whose members say the stratagem name out loud.
