Hunt: Showdown Best Weapons for Players Who Die
The strongest gun is the one you can afford to lose and will actually take fights with. Why the cheap families outperform premium rifles for new players.
The three families that carry a beginner
Romero 77 is a single-shot shotgun that costs very little and delivers around two hundred damage at point-blank. One barrel means one chance, which teaches you to make the shot count. It is the correct first purchase. Winfield rifles are cheap lever-action compacts with fast follow-up and good capacity. With the Levering trait they become close-range weapons; without it they are a steady mid-range rifle that punishes bad aim with a second shot rather than a reload. Springfield and Vetterli are the cheap medium-ammo single-shot and bolt guns. They hold damage further out than compact ammo and cost a fraction of a Mosin, which makes them the honest beginner’s rifle.
Why the expensive guns cost you matches
A player holding a Mosin plays differently from a player holding a Springfield. They hold angles longer, take fewer risks, and extract earlier — because losing the gun is a real cost. That caution loses matches, because Hunt rewards the team that takes the fight on its own terms. Cheap kits invert it. You push the compound because there is nothing to lose, and pushing compounds is how you learn. Players who run a 400-dollar kit for a week improve faster than players who run a 1,200-dollar kit and hide.
The trait pairing is the real decision
Traits are what turn a family from mediocre into a threat. Levering and Fanning turn lever rifles and revolvers into close-range weapons. Iron Eye and Scopesmith keep you aimed through the cycle. Bulletgrubber stops a partial reload from eating a round, which on a single-shot or small-magazine gun is ammunition. The trait rankings cover which of these pay first.
What each range band wants
Inside ten metres: shotgun. Ten to forty: lever or medium bolt. Past forty: long ammo, and a rifle that holds damage past its drop range. The ammo page explains why high velocity is the long-range round even though it cuts damage. Pick one band and build for it. A loadout that tries to cover all three ends up carrying a large slot it cannot use and a small slot it cannot reach.
