Hunt Showdown Engagement Range: Why Fights Happen at 30m
Most Hunt fights are decided between thirty and sixty metres. What that means for weapon choice and why sniping is rarer than it looks.
The range most fights actually happen at
Watch a dozen Hunt matches and the pattern is obvious: the majority of kills happen in the band where a compound’s windows and the tree line outside it overlap. That is roughly thirty to sixty metres - close enough that both players are committed, far enough that cover matters. Long-range kills exist, but they are a minority, because the map structure keeps pushing players into cover-dense areas where sightlines are short.
Why that band is where it is
Boss lairs are inside compounds. Extract points are exposed. The routes between them pass through cover. So the fight happens at the boundary between the last good cover and the compound wall. That boundary is a range, and it is the same range on nearly every map.
What this means for weapon choice
A weapon that is strong in the thirty to sixty metre band is a strong weapon in Hunt, regardless of what its stats say at a hundred metres. Shotguns dominate inside twenty and fall off hard afterwards. Rifles with high velocity hold the band well. Compact-ammo weapons are perfectly usable inside it and only suffer when you try to extend. This is also why scoped variants are less dominant than new players expect: the scope helps at a range most fights never reach, and costs peripheral vision at the range they do.
Close range is a different game
Inside ten metres, rate of fire and hipfire beat precision. A single-shot rifle in a doorway is a losing proposition against a lever-action or a shotgun, no matter how good the rifle is at range. Every loadout needs an answer to being pushed into a small room, whether that is a secondary, a melee tool, or a consumable.
Playing the band deliberately
If your weapon owns thirty to sixty metres, fight there. Do not chase a target into a building, and do not take shots at ninety metres that cost you your position. Instead, hold the boundary, let them come out of the compound, and use the range you built for. The reverse applies to close-range builds: close the distance through cover and refuse to trade at range.
