Hunt Showdown Extract Safety: Leaving Is the Last Fight
Extraction is where hunters wait. How to read an extraction before committing, and why arriving with a plan beats arriving with a full bag.
Why extraction is a fight
Extraction points are fixed and known. A player with a bounty knows roughly where the carriers are heading; a player without one knows where everyone eventually goes. Sitting near an exit is a legitimate strategy and it is common. So the correct mental model is that extraction is an engagement you have chosen to have, not a formality at the end of a raid.
Before you commit
Approach from cover, not from the road. The obvious route to an exit is the one being watched. Take the last fifty metres through terrain. Stop and listen before entering. Extraction has a sound cue. If it is running, someone is either leaving or waiting, and both change what you should do. Check for bodies. Bodies near an exit mean a fight happened here, which means someone may still be nearby. Know your second option. If the exit looks wrong, leave it. Walking into a prepared position with a full bag is the worst possible trade — the extraction page covers the available types and where they sit.
If you are the one waiting
The reverse advice applies. Extraction ambushes work best from cover with a clear line to the approach, and they fail when the ambusher gets impatient and moves. If you are holding an exit and a squad arrives that is clearly stronger — three players, you are alone — let them leave. The bounty is not worth a fight you cannot win, and there will be another match.
The carrier problem
The bounty carrier is visible to nearby players through Dark Sight, which means the exit fight is not symmetric: they know you are coming and roughly where you are, and you do not know they are there. That is why the carrier should not be the person leading the approach. Let somebody else walk the last stretch first, and keep the carrier behind cover until the exit is confirmed clear. The revive mechanics page explains why a lost fight at the exit is more expensive than at any other point — by then the squad has usually burned chunks and has nothing left to trade.
