Hunt: Showdown Wildcard Contracts Explained

Wildcard is a second contract type with its own time-of-day pool, only up on event days. What Inferno changes and when to queue it deliberately.

It is a time-of-day slot, not a difficulty

A wildcard condition replaces the lighting and weather of the match. It does not raise enemy health, add bosses, or change the payout rules. What it changes is information: how far you can see, how far sound carries, and which parts of the map are dangerous to cross. That makes it a loadout decision rather than a challenge toggle. A long-range build in heavy fog is a build with no weapon.

What Inferno does

The headline wildcard condition is Inferno, and it puts fire on the maps. Sections of terrain burn, hunters take fire damage near the flames, and immolators are immune to it. Three consequences matter in play. Visibility drops in burning areas, which compresses every fight into close range. Audio changes — footsteps are still audible but the fire masks distance. And explosives thrown into fire ignite faster, which makes a careless grenade a self-inflicted wound. During event versions of Inferno, pact hunters with the right trait can ignore the flames and heal inside them, and dedicated firefighter supply points appear with guaranteed fire-fighting gear. If you are not pledged, treat fire zones as hard barriers rather than soft hazards.

When wildcard is available

Wildcard contracts run on a schedule during events, typically opening for a few days at a time and closing again. Outside those windows the option is not there at all, so the mode is something you plan around rather than something you toggle.

Should you queue it

Queue wildcard deliberately when you want a different map read: fog and fire reward shotguns, melee and short-range aggression, and they punish the rifle-on-a-ridge playstyle that dominates the standard rotation. If your usual kit is long-range, wildcard is a useful forcing function — it will teach you the compound fights you have been avoiding. Skip it when you are farming hunt dollars. Wildcard conditions add death without adding payout, and the loadout economy page is where the money actually leaks. The rest of the mode structure — banish, token, extraction — is identical, and the extraction rules apply unchanged.
