Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Armor: Layers, Not Numbers

Armor in this game is a stack of layers with three stats. Why plate over nothing is worse than plate over padding.

Armor is built in layers

The system is not a single number. You wear padding, then mail or plate over it, and each layer contributes protection along with a cost to noise, visibility, and charisma. A full plate harness with nothing underneath protects less than the same harness worn over proper padding, because the layers are designed to work together.

The three soft stats

Noise decides how far you are heard. Visibility decides how far you are seen. Charisma decides how people react to you in dialogue and trade. Every heavy piece raises protection and worsens at least one of those. A knight in full harness is a poor thief, a poor speaker, and a loud neighbour.

What to wear for what

Combat: maximum protection, accept the noise and the charisma penalty. Stealth and theft: light clothing, no metal, dark colours. The protection loss is irrelevant because you should not be fighting. Town and dialogue: something clean and presentable. Appearance affects persuasion and prices, which is worth more than armour in a conversation.

Condition and maintenance

Armor degrades and needs repair. Damaged armour protects less, and the repair cost is part of the true price of a heavy harness. That makes maintenance a real economy: plate is expensive to own, not just to buy.

Buying order

Padding first, then the pieces that cover the most body, then the helmet. A helmet is the single highest-value purchase in the game because head damage ends fights. Do not buy a full harness before you can afford to repair it.

The trap of the heaviest set

The heaviest armour in the game is not the best armour. It is the best armour for standing in a battle line. For everything else, the mobility that lighter gear gives you prevents more damage than the protection it costs.
