KCD2 Combat Basics: Directional Rose, Stamina and Timing
How KCD2 combat works: the attack rose, stamina as a health buffer, perfect blocks, feints and combos — the foundation before the Master Strike.
The directional combat rose
When you draw a weapon, a rose appears showing where your blade sits relative to the enemy’s guard. Each strike is aimed at a zone — high, left, right, and a thrust — and your guard must match the direction of an incoming attack to block it cleanly. Strike where the enemy is not guarding and you bypass their defense. This is why wild swinging fails: if you keep attacking the same angle, the AI shifts its guard there and eats your hits for free. Mix directions, watch their guard, and aim at the open lane.
Stamina is your real health bar
Every action — swinging, blocking, dodging — drains stamina. As long as you have stamina, most connected hits chew through that pool instead of your health. The moment stamina hits zero, incoming blows bite into flesh and cause bleeding and trauma that can kill you outright. That single rule changes how you fight: do not spam. Throw a strike or two, then back off and let the green stamina ring refill. A patient Henry who manages stamina beats a flailing Henry with better gear. See stamina management for the recovery levers.
Perfect blocks and the green shield
When an enemy commits to a swing, a green shield icon flashes at the center of the rose. Tap block right as it lights up and you perform a Perfect Block: it costs no stamina and can interrupt the enemy’s chain. After a perfect block you can press attack to land a Riposte — and only another perfect block can stop a riposte. This is the defensive baseline. It deals no damage on its own, but it keeps you alive and sets up your counter.
Feints and combos
A feint is starting a strike in one direction and snapping it to another before it lands — it pulls the enemy’s guard out of position. Combos are sequences of directional strikes; land the whole chain and the final hit becomes unblockable. You unlock more combo strings as your weapon skill rises.
Fighting more than one enemy
KCD2 punishes being surrounded. Circle to force enemies into a single file, use doorways and rocks as funnels, and drop the most dangerous or most fragile target first. Full detail in fighting multiple enemies. The short version: read the rose, respect stamina, perfect-block on the green flash, and never stand in the middle of a ring.
