Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Shields: The Guard You Keep
A shield is not passive defence. How blocking, stamina and shield size interact, and when to drop it for a two-handed weapon.
Blocking is an action with a cost
Holding a shield raises your defence against frontal attacks, but every blocked hit costs stamina. Run out and your guard breaks, which is when the hits land. So a shield does not make you invulnerable, it converts damage into a resource you have to manage. The skill is in knowing when to block and when to step instead.
Shield size and what it costs
Larger shields cover more and weigh more, which affects speed and stamina. Smaller shields are faster and cover less. The choice depends on whether you expect to fight one opponent or several. A large shield against a single swordsman is a wall; against three, it is a wall that cannot turn around.
Shields and weapon choice
A shield requires a one-handed weapon. That rules out the heaviest hitters and pushes you toward swords, maces, and axes, which is not a disadvantage against armoured opponents. The combination that works best is a shield with a blunt weapon: the shield covers the slow recovery, the mace punishes anyone who gets through.
Shield as an offensive tool
A shield bash staggers an opponent and opens their guard. Used at the right moment it creates the opening your weapon cannot create by itself. That makes the shield an active part of the offence rather than a defensive accessory, and it is the technique most players never learn.
When to drop the shield
Against a single unarmoured opponent, a two-handed weapon kills faster and the shield’s protection is worth less than the extra damage. Against [archers](/guides/kcd2-archery-bow-guide/), a shield is worth more than any weapon. The decision is about what is shooting at you, not about what is in front of you.
Durability
Shields take damage and need repair like armour. A cracked shield protects less, which is one more maintenance cost to plan for when choosing a heavy shield.
