KCD2 Necessary Evil: Should You Tell Von Bergow?
The Necessary Evil choice decides whether Semine burns, whether you earn Silence is Golden, and whether Gules' chain survives. Here is the decision tree.
Option A — Keep it secret (recommended for most players)
If you do not tell Von Bergow about Olda, he believes you, the raid never happens, and you skip straight to For Victory. You earn the Silence is Golden achievement (“Thanks to you the raid of Semine didn’t happen”). Semine Castle stays standing, its traders and stable keep working, and you can later return to Jan Semine and tell him you did not rat his son out — he is grateful. For a first playthrough this is the cleanest outcome and it preserves the most content.
Option B — Tell Von Bergow (the raid happens)
Tell him, and he sends Hashek with you and Hans to ride on Semine. No matter how the confrontation goes, the castle burns. The difference is who dies:
- Side with Hashek — the most brutal path. Hashek butchers the castle, including Lord Semine, and kills Olda before torching everything. You lose every Semine NPC.
- Side with Semine — you fight Hashek and his men, Olda explains himself, and the Semines agree to burn the estate themselves and flee at night. The building still burns, but the residents survive. Even on the “good” branch, a burned Semine means the Gules quest chain (The Jaunt, Canker, Casper, Handsome Charlie, Johnny the Gob) is gone, because Gules and his tasks live at Semine. The stable and trader services vanish too.
Pebbles and the horse trap
Pebbles, your horse, is tied to the Semine horse trader. If Semine burns you cannot rely on reclaiming or buying Pebbles there. Sort out your horse from Groom Ballatay before Necessary Evil if you care about keeping him.
Reporting back to Von Bergow
After the raid you ride back and report. You can let Hans speak, stay silent, or tell the truth. One warning: if you choose to tell Von Bergow you killed Hashek yourself, there is a secret cutscene where Henry is led to the gallows. Confessing that you killed Hashek causes a game over, so let Hans maintain the cover story.
How this connects
This single choice is the Trosky point of no return described on the points of no return page. If an NPC from Semine later seems missing, the NPC diagnostic page explains why — burning the castle is the most common cause.
