Monster Hunter Wilds Armor Skills and Build Basics
How armor skills, alpha vs beta sets, decorations, and group skills work in Monster Hunter Wilds, and which skills to prioritise on a build.
Alpha vs beta
When forging High Rank armor you usually get an alpha (α) and a beta (β) version of each set. The trade is consistent: alpha parts carry more built-in bonuses but fewer Decoration slots; beta parts give up some built-in bonus for more Decoration slots. They also contribute different Group Skills — the bonuses you unlock by wearing multiple pieces of the same set — so the choice is not just about raw bonuses.
Decorations and orbs
High Rank quests drop Mystery Orbs that you trade for Weapon or Armor Decorations, which slot into the holes on your gear. Because beta armor has more slots, it lets you customise a build around the exact skills you want rather than whatever the set hands you. For most players a beta-heavy mixed set with the right decorations outperforms a full alpha set.
Skills worth prioritising
- Weakness Exploit — crit on weak-point hits. This is the single highest-value damage skill because it multiplies damage exactly where you should already be aiming (see weak points and hit zones).
- Flayer — opens Wounds more easily, feeding the new Wilds Wound loop (covered in the Focus Mode and Wounds guide).
- Focus — speeds up weapon charge attacks for the weapons that rely on them.
- Skills that add raw, affinity, or element depending on your weapon and damage type.
Build approach
Pick the damage type first from the elemental vs raw guide, then layer Weakness Exploit and the relevant element or raw skills. If you are on an Artian weapon, the Artian weapons guide explains the rolls you are stacking on top of. Remember: comfortable weapon play beats a perfect build on paper, so start from the best weapon overview and build around what you actually use.
