Monster Hunter Wilds Elemental vs Raw Damage
How elemental and raw damage compare in Monster Hunter Wilds, how Artian parts set your element, and why Weakness Exploit beats chasing affinity rolls.
Elements scale hard when stacked
Elemental damage multiplies against a monster’s elemental hitzone, and when you stack element — through an Artian weapon’s element parts, an element Decoration, and armor skills — it adds up fast. For monsters with a strong element weakness, an element-focused weapon usually beats a raw weapon on the same hit zones. The catch is that you must actually be hitting the part that is weak to that element.
Raw is simpler and always on
Raw damage applies everywhere regardless of elemental hitzone, so a raw weapon is a safe default when you are not sure of a monster’s weaknesses or when its elemental hitzones are poor. Many weapons, especially those with strong raw-focused moves, do fine on raw for most of the game.
Artian makes the choice explicit
Because an Artian weapon’s element is set by its three parts (two matching gives the element, three matching gives a stronger infusion, three different gives none), building elemental is a deliberate decision at forge time — see the Artian weapons guide. If you go raw on Artian, you free those part slots for Attack Infusions instead.
Affinity is better from skills than rolls
Affinity (crit chance) is tempting, but the community consensus is that you pile it far more efficiently through armor skills like Weakness Exploit than through Artian Affinity Infusion rolls. Treat affinity rolls as the leftover slot, not the goal. That leaves your Artian rolls and armor skills to push raw or element, whichever the target wants. Decide your damage type before you build, then read the armor skills guide to stack the right bonuses, and use the weak points and hit zones guide to make sure you are actually hitting the weak part.
