Heavy Bowgun Guide: The Only Gun With Two Defences
Heavy Bowgun is the only weapon with both an Offset Attack and a Power Clash. How Auto-Guard fits a ranged weapon, and when to plant your feet.
Slow by design
Everything about the Heavy Bowgun costs time. Movement, reloads, aim adjustments, firing — all of it is slower than the Light Bowgun. In exchange you get bigger per-shot values, better range, and a defensive layer that lets you stand your ground instead of repositioning. The weapon punishes hunters who keep trying to move like a Light Bowgun. You are not meant to be slippery; you are meant to pick a spot and make it expensive to approach.
Auto-Guard and the guard layer
The Heavy Bowgun can block. Auto-Guard makes some of that automatic, which is the feature that lets a ranged weapon survive in melee range, but relying on it blindly gets you staggered by attacks it cannot cover. Learn which attacks are actually blockable and which require you to already be somewhere else. A Perfect Guard off a shield block can start a Power Clash. For a ranged weapon that normally wants distance, a clash is a strange gift: it locks you into a struggle, and winning it drops the monster.
The offset gives you a third answer
Your Offset Attack handles the physical attack you saw coming and could not afford to block. Having both an offset and a guard means you have a structured answer to almost everything — which is why the Heavy Bowgun is a genuinely good solo weapon despite its speed.
Special ammo and the commitment problem
Your heavy ammo types — the ones that justify the weapon — come with long setup and long recovery. They belong in windows: a downed monster, a trapped monster, a monster locked into a long animation. Firing them at an active monster is the standard way Heavy Bowgun hunts fall apart.
Skills worth building
Recoil and reload friction reduction turn your slow weapon into a workable one. Guard and Guard Up support the shield half. Ammo-specific skills scale your chosen shot type. Building for pure damage and ignoring the friction skills is why many players find the weapon unusable.
