Hunting Horn Guide: Melody Uptime and Real Damage
Hunting Horn is a damage weapon that happens to buff. How to keep melodies active without dropping combos, and why the offset makes it safer.
Melodies come from attacking
You do not stop fighting to play songs. Notes are produced by your attacks, and performing the melody is a move like any other that happens to also grant the buff. The efficient pattern is to weave performances into your combo so the buffs land while you are already in range, not to retreat, play, and walk back in. That single habit separates a Horn player who contributes from one who is effectively a buff bot with a large weapon.
Echo Bubbles and area buffs
Wilds expands the Horn’s support role with Echo Bubbles, which create area effects the team can stand in. These are positional tools: placing one where the team is actually fighting is worth far more than placing it where it was convenient to play.
The offset makes it safe
The Hunting Horn is one of the six weapons with an Offset Attack. For a slow weapon with long animations, this is significant — it gives you a way to answer a predictable physical attack instead of eating it. It is not a guard, and it does not cover projectiles or breath attacks, so positioning still does most of the work.
Blunt damage means heads
Like the Hammer, the Horn deals Blunt damage, so head hits build stun. A Horn that spends the fight on the tail is contributing buffs and not much else. The weapon’s damage identity and its support identity both point at the same target, which is convenient.
Why it is rated advanced
Three things have to be tracked at once: your combo, your melody state, and the team’s positioning for bubbles. On top of that, the weapon’s animations are long enough that a bad commitment is expensive. That is why it is a poor first weapon and a very strong second one — the fundamentals transfer, and the extra layer becomes an advantage instead of a wall.
Build direction
Because notes come from hits, anything that increases hit frequency or damage per hit feeds the whole kit. Horn-specific skills that extend melody duration reduce how often you have to re-perform, which is effectively an uptime stat. Stamina and mobility skills help you survive the long animations.
