Light Bowgun Guide: Ammo Choice Is the Build
Light Bowgun is the most mobile ranged option and the most build-dependent. How Rapid Fire changes your ammo plan, and why the right shot wins.
Rapid Fire is the mechanic
Rapid Fire lets certain ammo types fire a burst for the cost of roughly one shot, and it is the reason a Light Bowgun can compete on damage at all. Your ammo plan should be built around the types your weapon rapid-fires well, then supported by normal shots for everything else. Players who fire whatever ammo is loaded, in whatever order, get the mobility of the weapon and none of its damage.
Ammo selection is situational, not personal
Pierce wants a long body. Spread wants a face. Normal wants a hitzone. Elemental wants the monster’s weakness and the right part. Status ammo is a team tool — a sleep or para that lands is worth more than your personal damage for that window. That means a Light Bowgun hunter should be re-reading the situation between reloads, not locking into one ammo type for the whole hunt.
You cannot guard your way out
Wilds gives Offset Attacks to six weapons and Power Clashes to six, and the Light Bowgun is in neither group. You have no shield and no offset move. Your defence is range, mobility and positioning — which is fine, as long as you do not stand still because the reticle is comfortable.
Critical range matters
Ranged weapons in this series care about distance. Too close and your shots lose effectiveness; too far and they do the same. Learning the sweet spot for each ammo type is the single most under-taught part of bowgun play, and it is why two players with identical builds can have very different results.
Skills worth building
Ammo-related skills that increase your rapid-fire output or reduce recoil/reload friction are your damage stats. Because you fire constantly, affinity investment scales cleanly. Evade skills substitute for the guard you do not have.
Common failures
Never changing ammo, standing in melee range because it feels safer, and treating the bowgun as a low-effort option. It is low-execution and high-preparation, which is a different thing entirely.
