Monster Hunter Wilds Tempered Monsters and Investigations

How tempered monsters and Investigations work in Monster Hunter Wilds — the main source of Artian parts and the best way to farm specific materials.

Tempered monsters

Tempered monsters are stronger versions that drop the weapon shards you need for Artian crafting, plus bloodstones (from the heavy pods dropped by destroyed tempered Wounds) used for melding. They unlock at HR15 through the “Investigating the Frenzied Shadow” quest. The higher the tempered monster’s difficulty, the higher the rarity of the materials it awards, so target the toughest tempered you can comfortably clear for the best parts.

Investigations

Investigations are High Rank hunts with bonus reward slots, and they are the best way to farm a specific material. You create them from Field Surveys — the open-world encounters you find while exploring. On the map each monster shows the type and number of special rewards it offers, so you can pick the one with the drop you want. Once saved as an Investigation it can be repeated, but each costs Guild Points and is limited to three attempts.

Field Surveys themselves

Field Surveys are the free-form encounters on the map. Fighting a monster there gives special additional rewards like decorations and rare parts, but monsters have a time counter and leave the area when it runs out. Some high-level monsters appear before you are authorised to hunt them — you can still fight them, but you will not get the special rewards or be able to make an Investigation from them until you reach the required rank.

Farming strategy

For Artian parts, run tempered hunts. For a specific monster’s materials, save an Investigation with good reward slots and burn your three attempts. For decorations and orbs, lean on High Rank and tempered quest rewards. The farming materials guide lists the steady sources, and the Artian weapons guide explains what to do with the parts once you have them. The endgame economy guide ties the whole loop together.
