STALKER 2 Zone Order: When to Move North
Progression in the Zone is measured in gear and protection, not in levels. Which regions to clear first and the signs you are ready to move on.
The shape of the map
You start in the southern regions — the Lesser Zone and the areas around it — where the hazards are sparse and the enemies are mostly human and poorly equipped. From there the map opens north through the middle regions toward Rostok and eventually the far north, where the endgame locations sit. The middle is not a straight line. Several regions connect sideways as well as north, and the order you take them in depends on which trader you have met and which technician can upgrade your gear.
The three readiness signals
Protection. If your suit cannot handle the radiation of a region, you are not ready regardless of your weapon. Radiation is the hard gate, not enemy difficulty. Ammunition economy. If a region costs you more ammunition than you can buy, you cannot sustain it. Go back, farm artifacts, come back. Repair budget. If every trip ends with a repair bill you cannot pay, the gear is above your income. That is the signal to spend a session on the artifact route rather than pushing forward.
What to do in each region before leaving
Meet the local technician and trader — the technician page explains why the tier of the local tech matters. Clear the anomaly fields at least once. Take the side work, because it pays coupons and it moves you through the map rather than around it. Then leave. Regions are not content to complete; they are equipment checks.
The mistake most players make
Pushing north for the story and arriving under-equipped. The game does not stop you, and the result is a run of deaths that feels like a difficulty spike but is actually a gear gap. If a region keeps killing you, the answer is almost always a session of economy work in the previous one — coupons, artifacts, repairs — rather than a better tactic. The money page covers what a productive session looks like.
Shelter as a planning input
Before a long trip, note the buildings on the route. Emissions kill anyone caught outdoors, and the emission page explains why the last building you passed is the one you should remember.
