STALKER 2 Emissions: Shelter, Timing and Survival
An emission kills anything outdoors, and the warning is short. Where to shelter, how the timer works, and what an emission changes on the map.
The sequence
The sky darkens, a sound cue plays, and a countdown begins. When it completes, anything outside takes damage until the event ends. It is not instant death, but it is fast enough that running for shelter after it starts is usually too late. The correct response is to move the moment the warning plays, not when the sky changes. That buys you the thirty seconds that decide whether you make it.
What counts as shelter
Interiors. Buildings, bunkers, caves, tunnels, the inside of a large structure. A roof over your head is the rule, and an awning or a vehicle is not — the game checks whether you are indoors, and half-covered positions do not qualify. The habit that fixes this: while travelling, keep a mental note of the last building you passed. When the warning plays you go back to it rather than forward to the one you hope is there. On long open routes, plan the trip around known interiors rather than around distance.
What it does to the world
During an emission, enemies also seek shelter, and some mutants become more aggressive afterwards. The period immediately after an emission is the best time to move through an area you could not cross before, because everything that was outside has been displaced. Some areas and enemy behaviours are tied to emission cycles, so the event is not purely a hazard — it is a reset button on the local map state.
If you are caught outside
Get inside the nearest structure even if it is occupied. Fighting inside a building during an emission is survivable; being outdoors is not. If there is genuinely no structure within reach, the least bad option is to keep running toward one rather than stopping.
Preparation
Carry healing and radiation treatment. Emissions are the most common moment when a player who has been ignoring supplies suddenly needs them, and the radiation page covers what to do about the exposure that follows an event. The zone order page lists which regions have dense shelter and which do not, and that is a factor worth knowing before you take a long trip.
